Spiders of Kentucky: A Floracliff Field Studies Workshop

October 5, 2019 @ 3:00 pm - October 6, 2019 @ 4:00 pm

$65

Instructor: Dr. James Wagner, Transylvania University

Hiking Level: Moderate

Spiders are one of the most diverse groups of terrestrial invertebrates yet most people only seem to know of black widows, brown recluses, and wolf spiders. This workshop is designed to introduce you to the great diversity in spider forms and behaviors and train you to identify some of the common families of spiders. We will utilize a variety of collecting methods to create a specimen collection for the Floracliff preserve and we will identify our captures to the lowest taxonomic level possible. Since many spiders are nocturnal, will visit Trail’s End at night to observe and document the spiders in the preserve.

Schedule:
Saturday, October 5th: 3 pm – 9 pm
Sunday, October 6th: 11 am – 4 pm

James Wagner is a Professor of Biology at Transylvania University. He has been studying the behavioral ecology of insects and spiders for the last 25 years. His research has been highlighted on a Discover Magazine segment for The Discovery Channel and on an episode of Weird, True and Freaky on Animal Planet. In 2001, he was named Kentucky Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.

Workshop Cancellation/Refund Policy: To cancel your registration and request a refund, please email info@floracliff.org at least 3 weeks before the event.
